“In the deep blue-green waters of Gyékényes lives a special fish, a fantastic koi carp known as “Grál”. Its uniqueness comes from its two-tone orange and brownish color and its impressive size, which is why it has become a legend.
Over three autumns, in three different years, I managed to catch this mystical koi carp. Each time, the same quiet, cool air enveloped the lake, the gentle rustling of the reeds and the mist rolling over the water signaled: autumn has returned, and with it, perhaps Grál too.
The first time, I could hardly believe it when its orange-golden body gleamed in the landing net. By the second catch, I already knew: this is no coincidence. And on the third occasion, when the scale showed 26.10 kilograms. My joy is indescribable that I had the chance to meet this extraordinary carp three times.
Even now, when autumn arrives in Gyékényes and the sun hangs low, the thought always lingers in my mind: maybe Grál will appear again… and perhaps fate will bring us together once more. I wish every fellow angler the opportunity to at least admire this wonderful fish once, or even catch it”
“This year I already visited here once, and something pulled me back, so I set off on a 650 km journey.
It will be quite a memorable weekend for me as I caught the biggest Koi carp of my life. With a short introduction, I will illustrate why catching this special fish is so interesting.
The lake in Gyékényes is a 400-hectare mining lake with lots of humps and fractures (think of it as an egg tray). The water is crystal clear, and the fish – especially the koi carp – are incredibly beautiful and strong. Grál is the king among them: a unique, colorful giant that many dream of.
After my first visit, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Something magical drew me back. When I arrived, the conditions were perfect, and after a few intense days of fishing, the miracle happened: Grál took my bait!
The fight was epic – strong runs, deep dives, but finally I brought him to the net. Holding that magnificent fish in my hands was an unforgettable moment. Tears of joy, pure happiness.
Thank you, Gyékényes – you made another dream come true!”
“It was the absolute best fishing experience of my life!
People say Grál isn’t a big fighter on the hook, but I’d love to prove them wrong! After a powerful take, I jumped into the boat and headed toward the fish.
At that moment, I had no idea that the most memorable hour of my life was just beginning. Every single frame is still vivid in my mind. A 40-minute hellish battle started, and I couldn’t even imagine what was on the other end.
I’ve never experienced anything like this before – we toured the whole bay with the fish, it kept itself constantly at 10 meters deep, and even when it finally tired, it only came up inch by inch. Then suddenly I saw the miracle right under the boat. As the fish broke the surface, I slid the net underneath. I dropped to my knees in the boat, and the tears just started flowing.
It’s almost impossible to describe this feeling to someone who isn’t an angler, but I think you guys know exactly what I’m talking about! In that moment, it felt like every dream of mine had come true.
Thank you, Gyékényes!”
